Accessible Housing for QCitizens
Balay Buhay Civic Startup Pitch
The social housing sector in Quezon City is truly alive as there are subdivisions and barangays wherein the houses are built by the government. The past programs included relocating people into the heart of the city to give the residents more work opportunities. The past administrations have focused on social housing but the current administrations have not given it enough focus as it needs. This election should be the turning point for the social housing sector in Quezon City.
However, the Local Government Unit of Quezon City still needs to improve its programs and services for social housing. These programs and services must at least address the problem of informal settlements in the city. The local authorities should also have the initiative to communicate with the residents to know their sentiments and indicate them to the general plan. It would eventually help the urban poor live in a sustainable, secure, and safe community.
Sustainable and Accessible: Our Vision for 2050
In partnership with the Quezon City Local Government Unit, we plan to build more houses for the homeless. We envision a partnership that will be more sustainable in the long run and also to build homes in accessible locations. QC Futures Lab envisions more communities where shelter is available to more people.
By 2050, Quezon City will have one of the lowest rates of homelessness in the country, as most residents have been provided homes that are low cost but comfortable. Shelter is a need that needs to be resolved within the city and this should keep families out the streets. This will drastically improve the living conditions of the city as a whole.
As we provide housing to our Quezon City residents, they will also have a sustainable livelihood, especially to the relocated urban poor. These livelihoods empower them to reach their full capability and help them generate income in the comforts of their community or homes. As social housing becomes accessible to most Quezon City residents, the houses are ensured to be at the utmost quality for comfortable living. Thus, these homes are built to withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and floods. Furthermore, all of the homes have access to basic services such as water, electricity, information technologies, transportation, health care, and education.
The safety and security of social housing communities shall also be guaranteed. Thus, these communities have access to disaster risk reduction and management plans for the safety of every member of the community. Also, through the efforts of the community and its leaders, residents go on with their daily lives without fearing crime.
Our Plan
To fulfill our vision, our team shall work closely with Quezon City LGU, Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC), and with the Housing Community Development and Resettlement Department (HCDRD) to determine suitable spaces for social housing and create a socially transformed community, empowered, self-reliant, productive, and self-contained community with improved quality of life provided with security of tenure through the City's Socialized Housing Program and suitable relocation or resettlement sites with basic services components.. These partnerships will aim to build more homes and communities that will reduce the rate of homeless families in the city. These will give the residents security when it comes to a roof over their heads and it would also help the government with their housing initiatives.
Furthermore, To ensure that sustainable livelihood will be attained, we will partner with NGOs such as Gawad Kalinga and Habitat for Humanity Philippines and local authorities in mobilizing communities, building capacity, forging partnerships that will spur economic development to the people and the community.
It should be emphasized that the Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. To promote safe and secure housing and communities, we will collaborate with Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (QCDRRMC) to provide DRRM plans and ensure the safety of the social housing residents. Our team will also promote and ensure the enforcement of the National Building Code of the Philippines, as well as guarantee access to basic services through partnerships with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Build Change.
